Don’t use pine or cedar shavings or clay cat litters. Aromatic oils in pine and cedar bedding have been shown to have adverse health effects on small pets.

Bedding made from virgin reclaimed cellulose, like CareFRESH, is safer for pets. Plus it’s more absorbent and controls odor better than competing products.

The problems with softwood shavings such as pine and cedar stem from the natural, armotic chemicals called phenols that give the woods their natural aroma.JN0-532 These phenols interact with the liver and respiratory system in the body, potentially producing unwanted and harmful side-effects. Articles containing more information, and medical references for the claims stated herein, can be found at the end of this section.

hello,,,,
I think it depends on who you talk too lol. I think most people agree that Ceder and air dried pine is bad. Kiln dried pine..its depends entirly on who you talk too, I have used it safely for many years and if anything my rodents have lived exeedingly long lives, far exeeding the average life expectancy(average is 3-5 for a Gerbil, average in my house is 6-8), however many will say its just as bad at air dried and ceder.

As a person who runs a Hamster rescue- and owns multiple Hamsters and Rats:

Kiln dried pine is quite safe, and used by many Hamster breeders but is not as absorbent or an odor deterrent.

The best bedding and not wanting to sound like a commercial, is Carefresh.

My personal favorite, for odor control, warmth, comfort and to spot any change in health is the Ultra Carefresh, the White variety.

The cage appears clean and bright.
It also shows off the Hamster quite well when I do adoptions.

After that is ANY of the COLOR varieties. I have found that the COLORS-
Tend to be softer, easy for the Hamster to breakdown/tear.
I believe this is do to the additional process of dying and rinsing.
COLORS, also tend to seem cleaner.

So, I highly recommend Carefresh when I adopt out a Hamster and often provide a small baggy of it to the new owner.

I have tried many other types of bedding but the Carefresh product is one I continue to use and go back to
