I’m not sure where this should be located, but figured this is as good a spot as any. I just finished writing a lengthy email to CareFresh but hoping someone here has had a similar experience. I’ve just purchased a bag of Carefresh Complete guinea pig food, it’s only 3 days old, and I’ve found small flies (moths?) and yellow looking worms or maggots crawling around inside. When I first opened the bag I saw a white strand of what looked like thread, and dismissed it. Now I can see small cocoons hanging on the insides of the bag attached to these threads.

I’m very concerned for my guinea pig’s health as I fed him this food for a couple of nights and had not noticed any worms at the time. I’m worried he may have ingested some eggs or something and who knows what it could be doing to his insides. I’ll be contacting my vet asap in the morning when they open, but I’m hoping someone here may know what these insects are and if they are dangerous to my pig.

Any information at all would be helpful, and I definitely will not be purchasing these products anymore.

Don’t use pine or cedar shavings or clay cat litters. Aromatic oils in pine and cedar bedding have been shown to have adverse health effects on small pets.

Bedding made from virgin reclaimed cellulose, like CareFRESH, is safer for pets. Plus it’s more absorbent and controls odor better than competing products.

I have a quick question about the Carefresh food for Guinea Pigs. I have two hairless Piggies (3 months old)... and the vet has told me to feed them Oxbow. Which was fine for the first month, until the pet stores around me stopped selling it. So I decided to switch to Carefresh (they are the ONLY ones who’s first ingredient isn’t “dehydrated” something).

Because my piggies are young, I’ve been giving them their Vitamin C through their water bottle (that is what the vet suggested, until they will eat it out of my hand). I noticed the Carefresh food has Vitamin C in it too, so should I stop feeding them the Vitamin C, or keep giving it to them?

I just don’t know if there is a thing with the Guinea Pigs as too much Vitamin C. :-)

I must say I have been using the Carefresh Bedding for YEARS. I have two rabbits, three mice, two hedgehogs, a short tailed opposum, and the two Guinea Pigs… and they all use the Carefresh Bedding. (Yes, I go through A LOT of bags in a month). I’m VERY excited about the food now too!

Thank you for making such a GREAT product!

I have 3 guinea pigs and I use this bedding. Recently, I noticed some changes to the bedding. The color is a lighter brown, has more moisture, the bedding particles are larger, but the worst change is that there is a strange smell. I am used to the dark brown, dry, small particle, and almost no smell type of bedding. Out of the last 9 bags I bought (the 60L), only 3 were of the “better” type. I noticed the change after Carefresh changed the design of the bag.

I took a picture of the two kinds of bedding I get. The one on the right is the “good” bedding.
http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/VkbRwdQiKwXTete9OBu_7Q?feat=directlink

Was I just unlucky and got bad batches? Has there been a change in how the bedding was made? Is this “smelly” bedding a permanent change?

Thank you

Within the past 6 months I’ve started using carefresh bedding. My rats and mice have developed parasitic issues in the form of mites and possibly lice. I actually found out that carefresh could be the issue from a website that suggested freezing the bags before using the bedding since this has been an apparent issue with other users of this particular brand. I would have liked to have been informed about this issue before purchasing this product. The infestation has effected the health of my animals and my peace of mind. The parasites are difficult to get rid of and I’ve spend a good amount of money at the vet. I will be sure to tell EVERYONE I possibly can about this. There should at least be a warning placed on the packaging.

Unbelievable.
